If you had to go for a first book I would pick up the first book chronologically in the Drizzt series (It was not the first one written). Homeland, Book 1 of the Dark Elf Trilogy. You do not get to meet a lot of Drizzt's companions that journey with him through most of the books but it is probably the best written. Homeland That's definitely the correct reading order. I really enjoyed the Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and Legacy of the Drow series, after that I just couldn't stay interested, I think I made it through Sea of Swords.
